Proof of Life / Lebenszeichen

Works from a Private Collection
The construction of the Tower of Babel as a massacre. The artist as a dead revolutionary. A stained-glass window made from butterfly wings. Proof of Life brings together 100 paintings, sculptures and photographic works that investigate existential questions in a both palpable and profound manner. Their aesthetic impact inevitably draws the viewer into its spell. What these works bring to view is linked to a tradition of influential pictures, some of which go far back in time. The presented works simultaneously quote, seduce, irritate, provoke and thematize concepts of moral values. This includes a summons not only to situate in historical terms what is being seen, but also to relate it quite concretely to the present. The works come from a private collection that has never before been publicly presented in this form. Proof of Life presents a precise selection of in some cases space-encompassing but always impressive works by international artistic stars such as Louise Bourgeois, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Anton Corbijn, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst and Daniel Richter. Where Does Your Heart Belong?

Works from the Signum Foundation
The exhibition, which appeals to both the head and the heart, offers insights into an outstanding Polish private collection. The conceptually vivid selection of works on display here is being shown in this form for the first time in Germany. The works come from the Signum Foundation that was established by Hanna and Jarosław Przyborowski in 2002 and is based in Poznań but also located in Łódź and Venice. The range of media extends from painting past sculpture to Performance and Process Art; from photography past neon-textual works and Concept Art all the way to extremely provocative and disturbing self-stagings in which traditional role patterns are critically examined. Artist Spaces

For the fifth time, the Weserburg is presenting new artists’ spaces in an exciting sequence. The artists are self-confidently opening up their works and concepts for debate. The exhibition accordingly conveys an insight into the diversity and quality of contemporary artistic production, which is impressively mirrored in the collections of the Weserburg – complemented by selected loans. Precisely in the differences, contradictions and encounters that thereby come to light, the artists’ spaces of the Weserburg react to the complexity of experiencing the world today. Several of the total of sixteen spaces were set up by the artists themselves especially for this exhibition. Besides painting, sculpture, photography and a video work, there are installations involving several media, all the way to a room filled by the Scottish artist Susan Philipsz solely with sounds. Junges Blut

Ausstellungs- und Kooperationsprojekt mit der Kunstschule Wandsbek
Junges Blut klingt wie eine Frischzellenkur. Und in der Tat bietet das Kooperationsprojekt mit der Kunstschule Wandsbek überraschende Einblicke in das Denken und Wirken junger Menschen. Inspiriert von der großen Sonderausstellung „Proof of Life / Lebenzeichen“ hat eine Gruppe Studierender eigene künstlerische Arbeiten und Konzepte entwickelt, um sie einer interessierten Öffentlichkeit vorzustellen. Brisante Fragen, die die eigene Identität, aber auch existenzielle Erfahrungsbereiche wie Tod und Leben berühren, werden auf vielschichtige Weise thematisiert. Ziel war es, den Studierenden für Kommunikationsdesign die Möglichkeit zu geben, künstlerisch frei zu arbeiten. Zugleich konnten sie die nötigen gestalterischen und organisatorischen Abläufe einer Ausstellungsproduktion kennenlernen. Innerhalb der letzten fünf Monate sind spannende bisweilen sehr persönliche Arbeiten entstanden. Die erfolgreiche Kooperation mit der Kunstschule Wandsbek findet mittlerweile zum dritten Mal statt. John Cage, Andrzej Dudek-Dürer, Robert Rehfeldt, Takako Saito – Artists’ mail in contemporary art
Letters, invitations, faxes and postcards from artists are often works of art in their own right. John Cage transformed his messages into mesostics, in which the middle letters of the words arranged vertically constituted a poem referring specifically to the recipient. Andrzej Dudek-Dürer uses his graphic works for his correspondence. Robert Rehfeldt wrote and drew letters which he then reproduced as art letters before furnishing them with individual greetings and stamp impressions. Takako Saito constructs her own exhibition invitations in the form of small objects enhanced with personal messages. A selection of artists’ post by other authors completes the presentation of the works of these artists. [more...]

Minimal. Here and Now

Works from the Lafrenz Collection
The Lafrenz Collection has substantially influenced the self-concept and image of the Weserburg, the collector’s museum in the middle of the river Weser, since its inception. As early as the 1970s, the Hamburg-based pharmacist Dr. Klaus Lafrenz had assembled a powerful and unmistakable collection of key positions in Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, Arte Povera, and related art trends from the United States and Europe. What particularly stands out is their questioning of the media and materials as well as of the basic conditions of the artist’s perception of these. Indeed, most of Lafrenz’s paintings, sculptures, and installations do not represent anything in a mimetic sense, do not depict anything that might exist outside of themselves. Instead, they create in a sensorial way unmistakable situations and confrontations that are immediately transferred into the space and ultimately to the viewer as well. [more...]
