Unter dem Radar (Under the Radar)

Underground Publishing and Self Publishing 1965 – 1975
OPENING Thursday, 29th October, 7pm with FRANK WITZEL, the 2015 German Book Prize winner for his novel "Die Erfindung der Roten Armee Fraktion durch einen manisch-depressiven Teenager im Sommer 1969". “That unpopular label “Underground” embraces hippies, beats, mystics, madmen, freaks, yippies, crazies, crackpots, commun¬ards and anyone who rejects rigid political ideology (a ‘brain disease’) and believes that once you have blown your own mind, the Bastille will blow up itself”, wrote Richard Neville in 1970 in his book Play Power – Exploring the International Underground. He was co-founder of Oz, which – along with IT (International Times), the most influential European magazine of the dawning counterculture – was one of the magazines that played a significant role in the “importation” of “Underground” models from the USA.[more...]

Inside the City

Artists’ Publications as Art in the Public Realm
The exhibition project "Inside the City" will focus on the changed constellations in and around the public space, and explore the means by which those constellations have been mirrored, subverted, adopted or in general addressed in contemporary artistic production since 1960. What stance do artists take in these contexts? And what strategies do they develop to deal with them?[more...]

Concrete tendencies today
"Reloaded – Konkrete Tendenzen heute“ (Reloaded – Concrete tendencies today) presents contemporary works which demonstrate that Concrete Poetry and its connected positions are experiencing a surprising revival. In the last few years, re-editions of previously out-of-print or unobtainable works have been published, as well as numerous editions and monographs of the veterans of the movement. At the same time, many contemporary authors and artists have been marked by Concrete Poetry and continue to develop it, influenced by contemporary media and by recent artistic tendencies. With works by Erica Baum, Natalie Czech, Cia Rinne and others. In cooperation with the Free University Berlin and the international festival Poetry on the Road.[more...]

Poetry goes Photography

“Poetry goes Photography” broadens the acoustic dimension of the literary festival Poetry on the Road. For several years already, Gabriele Witter has been documenting the festival with her camera. Her portraits and photos evoke and revive emotions, capturing the highlights and the small events of the festival. The exhibition aims to make visible the emotional aspect of poetry, going beyond the documentary nature of the photograph. In cooperation with Poetry on the Road and the University of Applied Science Bremen.

Lutz Dammbeck. Herakles Konzept (1977-1987)

Film Photo Book Action
In 1984 Lutz Dammbeck (born in 1948 in Leipzig) brought together all his assemblages of newspaper cuttings, archive material and photographs, his films or rather media-collages of painting, dance, film and music, his installations, images, photographs and texts under the title “Herakles Konzept” (“Hercules Concept”). A permanently-evolving total work of art, the Herakles Konzept became the central theme around which Lutz Dammbeck’s work continues to revolve today. It was inspired by three literary texts: Das eigensinnige Kind (“The Obstinate Child“) a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, Herakles 2 oder die Hydra (“Hercules 2 or the Hydra”) (1972) by Heiner Müller and Die Ästhetik des Widerstands (“The Aesthetic of Resistance”) by Peter Weiss. The three parts of the latter novel were published in 1975, 1978 and 1981 in West Germany and it was published as a complete edition in the GDR in 1983.[more...]
