Call for posters

Inside the City

The Centre for Artists’ Publications in the Weserburg in Bremen hereby invites artists all over the world to participate in poster actions to be carried out as part of the exhibition Inside the City. The posters will be shown in the city of Bremen during the exhibition period from 18 July to 11 October 2015. The size of the posters to be featured ranges from DIN A2 to DIN A0, with larger formats also possible in certain cases. The exhibition will be supplemented by the publication of the selected posters in an Internet version of the show.

The posters will be used exclusively for the purpose of public presentation in the city and in connection with publicity work carried out in conjunction with the show (e.g. website, press releases, flyer, documentation, etc.). Please therefore make sure that all copyright aspects have been definitively clarified and you are in a position to grant the Centre for Artists’ Publications the usage rights for your poster.

Please submit your poster designs as PDFs (do not send the posters themselves) in electronic form to info.studienzentrum@weserburg.de. The deadline for submissions is 25 May 2015. The Centre for Artists’ Publications will have the posters printed and take charge of posting them for the actions carried out within the framework of the exhibition.

Criteria

We will welcome a diverse spectrum of posters exploring the public realm and publicness. The posters should address one of the following areas:

  • Publicness as an aspect of life in society shaped by public opinion, information, self-determination and communication.
  • Public space in the form of squares, parks, streets or paths that are accessible and utilizable without special permission or fundamental constraints.
  • The loss of public space: privatization and commercialization of formerly public spaces through roofed pedestrian zones, café terraces and beer gardens controlled by private guard services and/or video cameras.
  • Publicness and the public space as a digital place of community, also by way of Twitter and Facebook.
  • Squares and streets as venues for the political demonstration of countervailing power.
  • Prohibitions on entry and loitering by unwanted groups of persons through the transformation of public spaces into private ones.
  • The media infiltration of publicness and the overlapping of the private and the public through the expansion of multimedia communication services, for example by way of tablet computers; the virtualization of the city, for example by way of Google Maps.

You will be notified by mid June 2015 as to whether your poster proposal has been accepted. Along with the notification you will also receive detailed information on the implementation of the poster actions.

For further information on the call for posters, please contact Anne Thurmann-Jajes at info.studienzentrum(at)weserburg.de. Further information on the exhibition project is available here.

The exhibition Inside the City and the poster action are a joint project of the GAK Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, the Künstlerhaus Bremen and the Centre for Artists’ Publications.

We look forward to collaborating with you and will be happy to answer any questions you might have.

With best regards,

Anne Thurmann-Jajes
