Fotokunst / Künstlerpublikationen

Cabinet exhibition in the Center for Artists' Publications

Photography is represented in the international collections, archives and funds of the Center for Artists' Publications in a variety of ways - in photo series, editions and printed publications. The range of artistic directions includes conceptual art, land art and performances. The selection presented on the occasion of fotokunstbremen reflects the artistic preoccupation with one's own person, the relationship between image and text, or with art itself.

Norbert Schwontkowski

Dass ich ein Maler war

In honor of the internationally active Bremen painter, who died in June, the Weserburg is showing a selection of works from the collections and loans from private collections. The Weserburg and the Study Center for Artists' Publications will present paintings, drawings, prints, and books by the artist. Included are never-before-seen early works from the 1980s and two equally unknown linocut and monotype series. Consistently striking here is the formal inventiveness, subtle humor, confident use of text and language, and a penchant for spirituality in Schwontkowski's oeuvre.

Werner Büttner

Gemeine Wahrheiten

With the retrospective "Werner Büttner. Gemeine Wahrheiten" (Werner Büttner: Common Truths), the Weserburg is presenting an extensive show of works by the Hamburg-based artist. Together with Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen, Werner Büttner has had a lasting influence on the German art scene since the early 1980s. Paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures bear witness to Büttner's ingenuity, irony, but also biting mockery of social realities. The exhibition highlights the importance of Werner Büttner in relation to the development of German painting in the late 20th century, which he significantly influenced.

Künstlerräume

Fifteen artists' rooms have been set up on the second floor of the Weserburg, which is largely laid out in a labyrinthine fashion. The positions assigned to the rooms stand for themselves and for the respective artistic oeuvre, but are also able to correspond with each other in the sense of a contrasting program. Painting, sculpture, photography, video, and text works are presented, inviting visitors to take a varied tour.

Künstlerräume

Werke aus den Sammlungen

15 rooms. 15 artistic worlds. The Weserburg once again presents highly diverse artists' spaces in an exciting sequence. The exhibition provides insight into the diversity and quality of artistic production today, which are impressively reflected in the Weserburg's collections. The artists self-confidently put their works and concepts up for debate. It is precisely in the differences, contradictions, and confrontations that come to light in the process that the Weserburg's artists' spaces respond to the complexity of today's experience of the world.

Nullpunkt aller Orte - Sammlung Dominic und Cordula Sohst-Brennenstuhl

In this exhibition, a young private collection from Hamburg is presented to a wider public for the first time. The works are by artists who belong primarily to the same generation as the collector couple themselves. Dominic and Cordula Sohst-Brennenstuhl attach great importance to this consensus. What the two are able to discover in art relates to their own thinking, their own perceptions, questions and insights.

Komm und sieh - Sammlung von Kelterborn

The second exhibition in the series "Young Collections" presents works from the private collection of Kelterborn in Frankfurt. The focus of this extraordinary collection is on socially relevant, philosophically profound and politically explosive works by internationally renowned artists. The von Kelterborn collectors are convinced that art enables us to make "the present" comprehensible in its complexity, its contradictions and cruelties, but also in its thoroughly positive potential, and indeed to experience it through the senses and the mind. She is particularly interested in photographic and video works.

Of the Universe

Meisterschüler der Hochschule für Künste 2014. Karin Hollweg Preis 2014

Welcome and farewell, graduation and departure: this year, the master students of the Fine Arts program at the Bremen University of the Arts are once again bidding farewell at the end of their studies with a large collective exhibition at the Weserburg. Under the title "Of the Universe," current works by sixteen young artists are on view. They impressively demonstrate the high quality and diversity of contemporary art production in Bremen. Aesthetic discourses are negotiated here just as convincingly as questions about the social role of art.
