Artists As Independent Publishers showcases around 100 artist books developed and produced as part of an interdisciplinary teaching and exhibition project on artistic publishing by students from five international art universities. The works explore a wide variety of print media and content. The exhibition in the library of the Weserburg reflects on the artist book as a means of critical inquiry, as a platform for communication between different artistic approaches, and as an independent artistic form of expression.

The project was initiated by the University of the Arts Bremen and was conducted there by Heike Kati Barath, Lena Judith Bartels, Marion Bösen, Katrin von Maltzahn, and Zane Zlemeša.

Other participating art universities include the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the St Lucas School of Arts Antwerp, the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf, and the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. After the presentation at the Weserburg, the exhibition will be on display at mumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien in Vienna from November 21 to 25, 2024.
