Frank Gerritz

Further down the line

For decades, the artist Rolf Julius has been one of the most important protagonists of an art that, in its free use of a wide variety of media, is able to tune artistic spaces into an atmosphere of precise concentration. In 1991, the year of the Weserburg's founding, Julius created a multi-layered spatial installation with works from the Finkenberg Collection especially for the rooms on the museum's top floor, which is still one of the museum's special spatial experiences today.

Peter Welz

it’s too fuckin’ loud and it’s too fuckin’ fast

Sculpture - Drawing - Video Installation. Peter Welz sees himself as a sculptor who investigates the questions of sculptural design with the medium of video. His primary interest is the movement of the human figure in space, which he subjects to extensive artistic research in various experimental arrangements. In the process, his work has been thematically guided by a year-long examination of the work of Samuel Beckett. Today Peter Welz is one of the outstanding artists of the young German art scene.

Go for it!

Olbricht Collection (a sequel)

Thomas Olbricht collects contemporary art out of conviction and passion. With around 1,500 international works, the Olbricht Collection is now one of the most renowned collections of contemporary art anywhere. The Essen-based physician and natural scientist also likes to collect outside the mainstream and always focuses his interest on very young art. In particular, his view of the themes of the body, death, religion, sexuality, his interest in the beauty, but also vulnerability of the human body makes the collection distinctive and in some respects very provocative.

Helmut Newton

Fotografien

"Bullshit! I love the girls, it's all a feminist misunderstanding." This is how Helmut Newton countered the accusation by Emma editor Alice Schwarzer a few years ago that he and his nude photographs were sexist, even racist. Newton was used to rejection. His precisely staged photographs with their deliberately exposed sexuality have always been a social provocation. In the 1960s, his images exploded the boundaries of traditional fashion photography, conjured up a new image of women, and for this very reason made him one of the most famous and best-paid photographers of the 20th century.

Jean-François Guiton

Hinters Licht - Videoarbeiten 1982–2008

In a comprehensive solo exhibition, the Weserburg presents the work of Bremen-based video artist and university lecturer Jean-François Guiton. His artistic approach to video and the technologies associated with it is in many respects pleasantly different from much of what "media artists" produce and stage. At first glance, his works, which consist of few elements but nevertheless fill a room, could be described as minimalist or conceptual, were it not for the fact that they always contain a narrative, literary, and sometimes even mythical level, which complements the technology in a special way.

Katarzyna Kozyra

Strafe und Verbrechen | Cheerleader

Katarzyna Kozyra's video installation "Punishment and Crime" is based on different contradictions: Between what we expect and what we actually get. Between what we want to see and what we can perceive. Between what we see and what we know. Between what we know and what we read. Even the title "Punishment and Crime" is a reflection of the title of another work that is always present in the consciousness of the average reader. It appears to us as a mistake, as a contradiction to our habits and logic.
