Bruce Nauman

Dance or Exercise on the Perimeter of a Square

Parallel to the Tanz Bremen 2010 festival, the Weserburg is showing one of the most important video works by the American artist Bruce Nauman: "Dance or Exercise on the Perimeter of a Square" from 1967/68. His "Square Dance" follows a minimalist choreography. It is reduced to a few sequences of movements, which he performs repeatedly without a dramaturgical climax, but with a high degree of concentration and tension. Here Nauman deals in a fundamental way with very simple postures and movements, which he himself describes as "dance problems without being a dancer".

Frank Gerritz

Invitationals | Auctions

Following the comprehensive retrospective of Frank Gerritz's work at the Weserburg in 2008, the Weserburg is now showing Invitationals and Auctions, a special block of works from the oeuvre that has only emerged in recent years. The Invitationals and Auctions are adaptations of printed matter from the art world that the artist has collected, selected, and reworked in decisive intervention. Using black paintstick, Gerritz intervenes in the motif worlds of other artists and covers parts of the printed surfaces in the black of his mostly geometric surfaces.

Chronische Fluxitis

Sammlung Maria und Walter Schnepel

The Bremen-based collector couple Maria and Walter Schnepel are enthusiastic about works by artists who are today grouped together under the term Fluxus. Their avant-garde spirit manifested itself since the 1960s in Europe, the USA and Japan. The Fluxus artists refused to go to museums, organized the first happenings and actions, and used all the media available at the time for their subversive works of art.

Minimal. Here and Now

Werke aus der Sammlung Lafrenz

Even at the time of the Weserburg's founding, the Lafrenz Collection had a decisive influence on the self-image and appearance of the collector's museum in the middle of the Weser. Since the 1970s, the Hamburg pharmacist Dr. Klaus Lafrenz had already amassed a distinctive collection of key works of Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, Arte Povera, and related art movements. The new presentation at the Weserburg now increasingly focuses on younger positions, creating space for exciting dialogues between early works from the 1970s and those of a contemporary generation of artists.

Olaf Metzel

Noch Fragen?

When talking about the connection of art to life, the sculptures and installations literally taken from life as well as the interventions of Olaf Metzel intervening in life itself occupy a special place in the art landscape of Europe. Metzel's works contain highly provocative references to the reality of life, which for him encompasses more than "everyday life" as such. He is concerned with the visualization of socially mediated contexts and contradictions, with their idiosyncratic interpretation, analysis, and criticism.

Götz Diergarten

Photographs

With his photographs, Götz Diergarten directs and sensitizes our gaze to the familiar of our surroundings. In his typological series, he examines the appearance of everyday architecture: German facades, Belgian beach cabins, British bath architecture, and European subways. The superficial banality of plaster and clinker imitations, windows, garage doors, and simple building structures is transformed in his photographic series into a typology of everyday culture.

Thomas Hartmann

Unruhe. Bilder 1979-2010

Thomas Hartmann is one of the most important painters of our time. For over three decades, the painting of the Berlin-based artist has been developing in a constantly reinventing artistic language. It relies on the never-ending desire to experiment and on the unknown. The Weserburg presents the multi-layered spectrum of Thomas Hartmann's painting with over 30 paintings from 1979 to 2010, most of which come from the Böckmann Collection in Berlin as well as from other private collections and from the artist's estate.

Olaf Schlote

Transit

The visual worlds of Bremen-based photographer Olaf Schlote describe a reality that is easy to overlook. Beyond the hectic flood of highly polished images, he creates his very own world with the light of photography: a world of intensely experienced moments and moments. For Schlote, photography is a medium for exploring reality, an instrument of special perception, an apparatus of what might be called groping vision. In a comprehensive exhibition, the Weserburg presents over 60 works from various creative periods from 1991 to the present.

19. Videokunst Förderpreis Bremen

Ausstellung und Preisvergabe

The Videokunst Förderpreis, awarded by the Filmbüro Bremen, has made it possible to realize works of art since 1992. And it does this in a special way: No finished video works are awarded, but concepts that are only realized with the help of the prize money. The Bremen competition thus does not honor what has already been seen, but focuses on the new and unknown. The focus is primarily on young artistic positions, especially those that have yet to be discovered. The exhibition at the Weserburg now presents the works of last year's winners Mario Pfeifer and Roland Eckelt.
