Tape tangle -record, rewind, playback, stop

Audio cassettes in contemporary art

Exhibition at the Center for Artists' Publications

The cassette recorder opened up new, simple possibilities for visual artists to record and distribute soundworks, sound experiments, interviews, and audio documents, especially since the 1970s. No longer bound to elaborate studio technology or minimum print runs, acoustic projects could be realized under their own direction and copied, distributed, and exchanged as needed.

PANORAMA

Young video art from Israel

The news that regularly reaches us from Israel is rarely reassuring. Even if there are periods of apparent calm, the conflict continues to smolder unstoppably and permanently threatens to turn into violence. What is it like to live in a country under permanent threat? How can a normal life be created on the brink of assassinations and bombings? In a lounge, the exhibition unfolds a panorama of strategies for confronting the conflict with current Israeli videos. With humor and respect, the artists confront everyday events, historical realities or create visions of the future.

KABOOM!

Comic in art

Comic strips and cartoons have been a constant source of inspiration for artists from the very beginning. But it was not until British and American Pop Art that the world of speech bubbles entered the galleries and museums on a grand scale. The Weserburg is taking up the theme with a large-scale exhibition. On display are works by more than 30 international artists. They impressively demonstrate the influence of comics on contemporary art from the 1950s until today.

Norbert Schwontkowski

Dass ich ein Maler war

In honor of the internationally active Bremen painter, who died in June, the Weserburg is showing a selection of works from the collections and loans from private collections. The Weserburg and the Study Center for Artists' Publications will present paintings, drawings, prints, and books by the artist. Included are never-before-seen early works from the 1980s and two equally unknown linocut and monotype series. Consistently striking here is the formal inventiveness, subtle humor, confident use of text and language, and a penchant for spirituality in Schwontkowski's oeuvre.

Werner Büttner

Gemeine Wahrheiten

With the retrospective "Werner Büttner. Gemeine Wahrheiten" (Werner Büttner: Common Truths), the Weserburg is presenting an extensive show of works by the Hamburg-based artist. Together with Martin Kippenberger and Albert Oehlen, Werner Büttner has had a lasting influence on the German art scene since the early 1980s. Paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures bear witness to Büttner's ingenuity, irony, but also biting mockery of social realities. The exhibition highlights the importance of Werner Büttner in relation to the development of German painting in the late 20th century, which he significantly influenced.
