The Way We Are 2.0

The Way We Are 2.0 brings together on 2,500 square metres more than 180 works from more than 100 artists from various times and contexts in a wide-ranging investigation of content and form. Thematic spaces arise from such perspectives as artistic approaches to identity or traditions of landscape, a varied play with everyday life or aspects of urban life, the meaning of coincidence or of the body, minimalist tendencies or social resistance. The exhibition format The Way We Are is designed as a multi-part series, which is brought to life once a year in an extensive variation.

At the end of 2019, some 210 individual works by Norbert Schwontkowski from the Brigitte and Udo Seinsoth Collection were transferred  permanently to the Weserburg Museum of Modern Art. Thanks to this generous gesture, the museum is able to present a permanent artist‘s room dedicated to Norbert Schwontkowski, which supplements major works from the Seinsoth Collection with additional loans and is given a new emphasis once a year.

The folded city

Children culture project of quarter

A city unfolds - and grows together! Paper and art and children belong together. Because paper is something precious and living. Our world is unimaginable without paper. It is inseparable from our culture. Folding, gluing, cutting, tearing, cuddling, pressing or simply floating or flying - all this is possible with the material and fascinates not only the children and young people, but also the 30 participating artists who work with the children's groups in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Exploring the city, one's own district with its diverse life is the theme of the project.

Birgit Jürgenssen. Ich bin.

Birgit Jürgenssen (1949-2003) belongs, along with VALIE EXPORT and Maria Lassnig to the artistic avant-garde of the 1970s in Austria. Subsequent generations of artists throughout the world were deeply influenced by her creative output as an artist, teacher and observer of cultural and social conditions. Tying into art-historical traditions such as Surrealism and Antiquity, she developed an autonomous and varied oeuvre which, in addition to a rich store of drawings and photographs, also includes sculptures, objects, videos and collaborative projects.

NEUSPRÉCH

An exhibition in the Centre for Artists' Publications

“NEUSPRÉCH (NEWSPÉAK) is language infested with art, infected. Speaking with art - as art,” say Oliver Ross and Simon Starke, the curators of the exhibition. NEUSPRÉCH takes up a central concept from George Orwell’s novel 1984 in a newly accentuated way and with a view to the resistance in the context of visual art. The artists position themselves against the atrophy of language of a technological compulsion to unify, against marketing speak, pegida speak, art business speak, anti-terror speak, political speak, against the whole range of we/they speak.

Artists' Publications: analogue - digital!

Cabinet Exhibition at the Centre for Artists' Publications

What are digital artist publications? How are they published and how do they appear as works of art? What emerges artistically explicitly as a digital work? The exhibition Artists‘ Publications: analog – digital! is dedicated to these questions, which have been artistically relevant since the 1960s, but which have been further updated in times of the Corona pandemic.
Artists‘ Publications: analog – digital! takes place both as a cabinet exhibition in the Centre for Artist's Publications and as an online exhibition at www.analog-digital.art.

Elina Brotherus

Why not?

Elina Brotherus (*1972 in Helsinki) is internationally known for her self-portraits. And the fact is that she herself may be seen in almost all of her photographic and video works. These include series resembling diaries, photographed landscapes and situational mood-pictures. The exhibition at the Weserburg directs attention to more recent works and groups of works created since 2016. Here the Finnish artist appropriates various contemporary concepts of art and integrates them into her own unmistakeable aesthetic. She thereby follows Arthur Køpcke’s motto: ‘People ask: Why? I ask: Why not?’

Shunted Sculptures Fleeting Words

Meisterschüler*innen der HfK Bremen

The exhibitions of the Meisterschüler*innen, which have taken place at the Weserburg annually since 2011, give a multifaceted insight into the quality and variety of current art production in Bremen. A special highlight is the Karin Hollweg Prize-giving, linked to the presentation. With a total of 15,000 euros, it is one of the most important art sponsorship awards at German art schools. Half of the prize money is reserved for an institutional solo exhibition in Bremen. In 2020, 19 artists will take part in the presentation, which will exclusively show new, partly location-based works.
