The Way We Are 3.0

The exhibition brings together more than 190 works from different eras and contexts and addresses both contentual and formal issues. Seven thematic areas formulate artistic approaches to depicting the human being, develop a current picture of Germany, engage in multifaceted play with everyday life or the medium of the book, and investigate minimalist tendencies, photographic procedures or aesthetic contradiction. And with Mel Chin an artist’s bar even makes an appearance.

For the second time, the Centre for Artists' Publications is hosting Artists as Independent Publishers - a cooperation of international universities, this time presenting current artists' books by students from Antwerp, Bremen, Halle, London, Vienna and Tokyo. As an interdisciplinary teaching event and exhibition cycle, Artists as Independent Publishers aims to actively take up, explore and help shape trends and possibilities in contemporary art.

Luca Vitone. Macht

The Italian artist Luca Vitone (*1964, lives in Milan) traces the manifold imprints that are deposited in spaces and determine both their appearance and our idea of them. In creating his conceptual portraits of different places, he incorporates emotional as well as cultural, social as well as historical, economic as well as political aspects. Since the 1980s, he has used film, painting, photography, installation, audio piece, or scent installation to pose questions about memory of and longing for home, about migration and the representation of spaces.

Among the fruitful relationships between art and literature, the dialogue between poetry and sculpture plays a special role, but one that has received very little attention. The exhibition focuses on a tradition of experimental poetry and visual art since the 1960s, in which texts appear as three-dimensional (art) works.

Peter Piller - Richard Prince

With Richard Prince (*1949) and Peter Piller (*1968), two artists focusing respectively on American myths and the realities of life in Germany — different generations, diverse worlds —, there is an encounter at the Weserburg Museum for Modern Art between two extremely original artistic oeuvres offering exemplary presentations of life and thought in and through pictures.

Peter Piller – Archive of Books

Cabinet exhibition in the Centre for Artists‘ publications

For his artistic work, Peter Piller has always preferred the formats of artists’ publications. As a rule, he transfers selected groups of artistic works into the form of an artist’s book, a postcard or graphic edition. The images used come from the artist’s archive. They come from different contexts. For example, he has categorised about 7,000 press photos into more than 100 subject areas.

Mateo Maté. Landscape Europe 2020-2021

Commissioned by the Instituto Cervantes Bremen, the Spanish artist Mateo Maté created an art work especially for the Weserburg. The installation Landscape Europe 2020 is a gift donation to the museum.

Meisterschüler*innen of the Hochschule für Künste Bremen and Karin Hollweg Prize 2021

The annual Meisterschüler*innen exhibitions provide a multifaceted insight into the quality and diversity of current art production in Bremen. A particular highlight of the exhibition is the awarding of the Karin Hollweg Prize. Endowed with a total of 15,000 Euros, it is one of the most important art promotion prizes within German art schools. Half of the prize money is reserved for an institutional solo exhibition in Bremen.

CHRISTMAS GIFT

Cabinet Exhibition at the Centre for Artists' Publications

From 1988 to 2018, the entrepreneur Peter Norton (California) gave annual gifts to friends, colleagues and selected institutions as part of his Peter Norton Family Christmas Gifts - small works of art in limited editions, each specially designed for this project. Among the artists are Christian Marclay, Kara Walker and Lawrence Weiner. The Weserburg Museum of Modern Art was also among the recipients.

Ulla von Brandenburg

Eine Landschaft ohne Blau, wie ungefähr

With Ulla von Brandenburg (born in 1974 in Karlsruhe, lives in Paris) the Weserburg Museum of Modern Art is showing one of the most multifaceted installation artists of her generation. By means of large-format fabrics, expansive installations, intimate objects, imaginative films, watercolors and performances she transforms exhibition spaces into intensely colorful dream worlds.
